There are two kinds of events in life. One class of events is the dissappointing variety. The best part of the event is in the anticipation, with the event itself not living up to the anticipation. My most memorable event of this nature was a knitting retreat to Cleveland. (That particular trip turned out to be the trip from hell, but that only helped to make the trip memorable.) The founder of Lorna's Laces was to speak. At the time I was a Lorna's groupie. I loved knitting with Lorna's Laces. I loved the colors. Then there was the speech. The thing most disappointing about it was the obvious lack of respect for the audience as there was nothing prepared and a whole lot of self-aggrandizing. My anticipation turned to ashes in my mouth, quickly rinsed out with a primo gin and tonic.
The second class of events is the "Oh, Yeah! Freakin' A" variety. Last night was OYFA par excellence. The Yarn Harlot made a stop in Lexington at the Mother Ship JosephBeth's. She had prepared her evening's chat. She was gracious. She was clever and funny. Most of all, she was herself.
I had traveled down earlier in the day and picked up my reserved copy. The clerk had lost his will to live, but I didn't care. I stopped by Magpie Yarns and picked up a couple of skeins I needed to finish a project. Then I checked in to my hotel. I stayed at the Double Tree. It was wonderful. The most wonderful thing about it was the jacuzzi tub, which I had to try out twice - once before the event, then again after. I took a nap. Refreshed I headed out to the event.
I met up with one of the people from my knitting group and her friend. We had a blast, sitting and knitting while listening to Stephanie Pearl-McPhee talk about the lifestyle that is knitting. After getting my book signed, the three of us went to dinner at Tony Roma's for some ribs. Yum!
I got back to the hotel, took another soak in the tub and went to bed.
This morning, I drove straight down Richmond Road and through downtown Lexington to get to the Interstate listening to Patti Griffin. Her songs were the perfect soundtrack for driving down streets bordered by budding trees, blooms, and the green grass of spring. This weekend was just the doctor ordered.
